Actress, director, producer, teacher, activist - this is how Olympia Dukakis defines herself.
A veteran of stage and screen, she founded and served as artistic director of New Jersey's whole theater, and sits on the boards of several influential arts organizations.
The Academy Award and Golden Globe-winning star of such films as Moonstruck, Steel Magnolias, Picture Perfect and the top rated mini-series Tales of the City, Olympia Dukakis is a woman of uncommon achievement and dedication.
The Academy Award winner for her role in the film "Moonstruck" speaks with enthusiasm about her work with students. "I am delighted to work with students because I have the opportunity to see how I can "touch" them and discover their talents and what they can offer, so I know how I can help them. I find it interesting to watch them change and develop their talents," said Mrs. Dukakis.
I'm trying to motivate and support young boys and girls who want to become actors," says the actress. She tells their Greek parents are afraid their children to become actors and adds that she always encourages them not to be afraid and to leave their children to become actors.
One of the most important events in the history of film education in Cyprus took place on February of this year. Oscar winner Olympia Dukakis was in Cyprus for one week to hold an intensive “How to Work with Actors” workshop at ARTos Foundation.
Olympia Dukakis has starred in films like Steel Magnolias, Mr. Holland's Opus, Mighty Aphrodite, and Moonstruck, for which she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
After years of acting in movies and television, Ms. Dukakis felt the biggest gap in the education of her peers was in the communication between actors and directors. For this reason she has created a workshop that deals with exactly that subject. She has been invited to teach this workshop at New York University and Columbia University’s graduate film program.
The workshop which took place at Artos Foundation from the 16 – 21 of February, 2010, was ideal for professional actors and directors who want to improve their skills with hands-on practice.
The idea was to be able to work together under the guidance of Ms. Dukakis, and workshop original material and do scene work in a low stress environment. This was also a great opportunity to create collaborative relationships for future projects.
The workshop was organized by Dead Famous Productions through the support from the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Speaking to the press Dukakis said that the Cyprus seminar, which was specifically aimed at professional actors and directors, came about after she was able to combine an invitation to the island formDead Famous Productions Creative Director Harry Marvromichalis (picture abobe) with requests to speak in Greece.
Olympia Dukakis was born on June 20, 1931, in Lowell, Massachusetts), the daughter of Greek immigrants (Constantine and Alexandra (nee Christos) Dukakis). Her father in particular sparked an early passion in acting by having her perform with his amateur theater troupe as a teen. 
Olympia took the long road to success by distinguishing herself first on stage performing in summer stock and with several repertory and Shakespearean companies throughout the county. She made her Broadway debut as an understudy in "The Aspern Papers" at age 30, but did not make the grade there with very short runs in the plays "Abraham Cochrane" (1964) and "Who's Who in Hell" (1974) following.
She has three children, Christina, Peter, and Stefan; two grandchildren, Isabella and Sofia; and her cousin Michael, former Governor of Massachusetts, was the Democratic presidential candidate in 1988. Her brother’s name is Apollo Dukakis.
Olympia Dukakis speaks most passionately about her family. Dukakis has been married to actor Louis Zorich since 1962. She has three children, Christina, Peter, and Stefan; two grandchildren, Isabella and Sofia; and her cousin Michael, former Governor of Massachusetts, was the Democratic presidential candidate in 1988. Her brother’s name is Apollo Dukakis.

On the seminar's subject, Dukakis said that her experience in theatre and film had shown her that there was often a lack of communication between actors and directors, something she hoped to help remedy.
She also told the press that directing for theatre and film involved completely different approaches while the main difference for actors was "going from moment to moment" to best reftlect their character's changing emotions on screen and close-ups in particular, which was not as crucial on stage.
Revealing that her berakthrough role in "Moonstruck" came at the age of 55, when the film's director spotted her on Broadway. 
Dukakis said that what she enjoyed most in her work was the "fear of starting something new" and said she was pleased to have portrayed a wide variety of characters during her career.

In an effort to combine these beliefs with her art, Dukakis launched "Voices of Earth," a theater project featuring four actresses who explore the relationship between women and "Mother Earth" from an historical perspective.

Η ηθοποιός του κινηματογράφου από τη δεκαετία του ΄60, κάτοχος βραβείου Όσκαρ B΄ ρόλου για την ταινία «Κάτω από τη λάμψη του φεγγαριού», Ολυμπία Δουκάκη, ήρθε στην Κύπρο και δίδαξε στο σεμινάριο «How to work with Actors».
Το Σεμινάριο οργάνωσε με επιτυχία η εταιρεία καλλιτεχνικών παραγωγών Dead Famous Productions, με τη στήριξη των Πολιτιστικών Υπηρεσιών του Υπουργείου Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού.
Το σεμινάριο πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Ίδρυμα Άρτος από 16 μέχρι 21 Φεβρουαρίου και αποτέλεσε ένα από τα πιο σημαντικά καλλιτεχνικά γεγονότα της χρονιάς.
Το σεμινάριο ήταν αποτέλεσμα των προσπαθειών του ταλαντούχου σκηνοθέτη Χάρη Μαυρομιχάλη να φέρνει κοντά στους Κύπριους καλλιτέχνες διεθνείς προσωπικότητες από τους αντίστοιχους χώρους τους. Ο Χάρης ζει και εργάζεται με επιτυχία στη Νέα Υόρκη.
Έχοντας τεράστια εμπειρία στις τηλεοπτικές παραγωγές και στον κινηματογράφοη Ολυμπία Δουκάκη εντόπισε ένα σοβαρό πρόβλημα που αντιμετωπίζεται σταγυρίσματα που αφορά την επικοινωνία μεταξύ ηθοποιών και σκηνοθέτη. Γι’ αυτότο λόγο έχει δημιουργήσει ένα εργαστήρι στο οποίο εξετάζεται και αναλύεται

Πάνω σε αυτή τη βάση δίδαξε ως επισκέπτρια καθηγήτρια στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Νέας Υόρκης και στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κολούμπια.
Σ’ αυτό το σεμινάριο/εργαστήρι συμμετείχαν επαγγελματίες ηθοποιοί και σκηνοθέτες. Στόχος ήταν η εκμάθηση δεξιοτήτων για την αγαστή, επιτυχημένη και χωρίς άγχος συνεργασία ηθοποιών και σκηνοθέτη.
Η Ολυμπία Δουκάκη ξεκίνησε τη διδακτική της καριέρα στο τμήμα New School ofArts, του πανεπιστημίου Καλών Τεχνών Tisch της Νέας Υόρκης λίγο μετά την ίδρυσή του το 1965. Προς τιμή της το πανεπιστήμιο δημιούργησε ετήσια υποτροφία «Ολυμπίας Δουκάκη» που απονέμεται κάθε χρόνο σε φοιτητή ή φοιτήτρια με υψηλές αποδόσεις στο τμήμα ηθοποιίας του πανεπιστημίου.
Η Ολυμπία Δουκάκη είναι ηθοποιός, σκηνοθέτης, παραγωγός, καθηγήτρια, ακτιβίστρια και συγγραφέας. Η πρόσφατη αυτοβιογραφία της «Ρώτα με πάλι αύριο» («Ask Me Again Tomorrow») έγινε μπεστ σέλερ στις ΗΠΑ.

Η Ολυμπία Δουκάκη είναι παντρεμένη με τον Αμερικανό ηθοποιό Louis Zorich (Σερβικής καταγωγής) από το 1962. Έχουν τρία παιδιά, την Christina, Peter, και τον Stefan, και δύο εγγόνια την Ισαβέλα και τη Σοφία. Έχει ένα αδελφό τον Απόλλων Δουκάκη. 
Παιδί Ελλήνων μεταναστών, γεννήθηκε στις 20 Ιουνίου στο Lowell, της Μασαχουσέτης των ΗΠΑ. Ο πατέρας της Κωνσταντίνος καταγόταν από τη Μικρά Ασία και η μητέρα της Αλεξάνδρα (το γένος Χρίστου Δουκάκη) από τη Πελοπόνησσο.
Κατάμεστο το αμφιθέατρο όπου έδωσε διαλέξεις η Ολυμπία Δουκάκη. Σε πρώτο πλάνο ο Κρίστης Βασιλειάδης με νεαρές ηθοποιούς λίγο πριν την έναρξη της ταινίας "Away from her".
Μετά τη συζήτηση έγινε συζήτηση και η Ολυμπία απάντησε σε πλήθος ερωτήσεων.

Απλή, καταδεκτική συνομιλεί με τους πάντες για τα πάντα. Δεν αφήνει κανένα χωρίς να του δώσει σημασία και να τον ενθαρρύνει.
Ήταν πραγματικά απόλαυση να ακούε κανείς την Ολυμπία να διδάσκει θέατρο και να ακούει τα τόσα ενδιαφέροντα από την τεράστια πείρα και γνώση της.
Αγαπά αυτό που κάνει και θέλει να βοηθήσει νέους ανθρώπους να διακριθούν στο θέατρο.
Μέχρι τα πέντε μου χρόνια λέει δεν ήξερα Αγγλικά. Μιλούσαμε στο σπίτι μόνο Ελληνικά. Όταν πήγα σχολείο δυσκολεύτηκα στην αρχή.
Ο πατέρας μου λέει, ήταν αυτός που με ενεθάρρυνε να ασχοληθώ από το σχολείο με το θέατρο. Η μητέρα μου ήταν Μανιάτισσα και κάποτε με πιάνει το μανιάτικο μου λέει στα ελληνικά και γελά.
Ο ξεχωριστός αυτός άνθρωπος, η γλυκιά και σπάνια προσωπικότητα της Ολυμπίας, κέρδισε τις καρδιές όλων.
Στην Αθήνα, μου έλεγαν ότι το φαγητό στην Κύπρο είναι καλύτερο...
Δεν το πίστεψα, μέχρι που το δοκίμασα και συμφωνώ μαζί τους πια... λέει η Δουκάκη χαμογελώντα.
Απλή και καταδεχτική, παρά τη φήμη της, όπου βρισκόταν σκορπούσε χαμόγελα γι' αυτό και κέρσισε τις καρδιές του κόσμου. Και ποιος δεν θα 'θελε να φωτογραφηθεί με μια διασημότητα όπως είναι η Ολυμπία Δουκάκη...
Ο Κρίστης Βασιλειάδης ο οποίος βοήθησε μαζί με τον Χάρη στην επιτυχία της όλης προσπάθειας των σεμιναρίων και άλλων δραστηριοτήτων. Η Ολυμπία διάλεξε το πιό απλό εστιατόριο για φαγητό.
Ενώ διδάσκει με πολλή προσοχή και αγάπη για τους μαθητές της.
Στο παλιό αρχοντικό που διαμορφώθηκε για σκοπούς πολιτιστικών δραστηριοτήτων.
