Former US President Bill Clinton in Cyprus for a lecture

A great leader in a small country

Former US President Bill Clinton served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001 was in Cyprus, on Saturday as a guest of the European University in Nicosia, and delivered a speech on the current global economic crisis.

Clinton who visits Cyprus for the first time, addressing an audience of more than 600 people noted in his speech that humanity is interdependent and if we all choose to invest in productive cooperation rather than in conflict, then we will all have a better future and we will all share the benefits. He urged Cyprus to expand its renewable energy source (RES) sector to help tackle global warming, create jobs and keep energy costs down.

Referring to the discovery of natural gas reserves in the island’s exclusive economic zone, Clinton said, “Lucky you”. But he quickly advised Cyprus to make good use of its natural gas, and stressed the important role of solar and wind power, and tidal energy.

Clinton said he spent a great deal of time dealing with issues relating to Cyprus when he was US president from 1993 until 2001. He added that he had strongly supported “the entry of Cyprus to the EU”, a comment which was loudly applauded by the 500-strong audience that included Ministers, former government officials, political leaders, MPs and diplomats.

 

He said Cyprus had nothing to do with the global crisis, yet it was suffering the effects and finding it difficult to grow.

He said the developed world needed to figure out a new model of growth. Clinton said he had loved being president, but it was always about two things: “What are you going to do and how much money will you spend?” He said they never asked: “how you plan to do it.”

He gave the example of pensions. He said if a government had obligations towards pensions that it couldn’t pay for, this was just as bad as unequal treatment, as it was making promises it couldn’t keep. He said opportunities for economic growth should be taken, just so long as the general public wasn’t being put at risk.

 

Clinton was asked by one student to comment on the high unemployment rates, especially among youths. “When you have nominal growth but no new jobs, that should tell you there is a problem,” said Clinton.

He made no direct reference to the Cyprus problem but did describe a recent scientific task students were given on global warming as an example of cooperation amid deep distrust. The winning group had four students from China, Taiwan, India and Pakistan. “Their countries have been at each other’s throats for decades, put them in a group together and they were there, savvy and over everything their parents have been going on about,” said Clinton.

“I am sure I am right that the future belongs to those who choose creative cooperation over conflict.”

 

In his welcoming remarks, the President of the European University Andreas Eleftheriades stressed that it is a great honor for the University to have President Clinton as a speaker. He noted that during his term as governor of Arkansas and later as the President of the US, Clinton was committed to knowledge and education.

Eleftheriades also, praised Clinton for being responsible for the longest period of prosperity and economic expansion in US history, as well as having an active involvement in Greek-American efforts to reverse Greece’s present negative image.

Ο Μπιλ Κλίντον o 42ος Πρόεδρος των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών και Επίτιμος Chancellor του Laureate International Universities, μίλησε στο Ευρωπαϊκό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου το Σάββατο 21 Ιουλίου για « Την Παγκόσμια Οικονομική Κρίση». Ήταν η πρώτη φορά που επισκέφθηκε την Κύπρο. 

«Η πληροφορία, η εκπαίδευση και η μόρφωση είναι τα πάντα» τόνισε στη διάλεξη του πρώην πλανητάρχης, αναφερόμενος στην αστάθεια του συστήματος που οδηγεί στην οικονομική κρίση. «Όταν οι ιθύνοντες δεν βάζουν όρια στην αστάθεια, εμποδίζουν την ανάπτυξη και ξεκινά ένας φαύλος κύκλος ύφεσης», πρόσθεσε. 

 

«Χρειάζεται ένα νέο μοντέλο για την ανάπτυξη που δεν θα εμπεριέχει άλλα οικονομικά ρίσκα, κάτι που είναι εφικτό για την Ευρώπη», σημείωσε φέρνοντας παραδείγματα από τη θητεία του. Αξίζει να αναφερθεί πως επί της 8ετούς θητείας Κλίντον (1993-2001), η Αμερική γνώρισε σημαντικές αλλαγές και ευημερία. Επί πολιτικής διοίκησης έγινε η μεγαλύτερη κατά την τελευταία 30ετία επένδυση στην εκπαίδευση. Μετά την αποχώρησή του από το Λευκό Οίκο, δημιούργησε το William J. Clinton Foundation και, παράλληλα, το Clinton GlobalΙnitiative (CGΙ). 

Ο πρόεδρος Κλίντον αναφέρθηκε στην επιτακτική ανάγκη μιας μακροπρόθεσμης αντιμετώπισης για τη μείωση του χρέους και μιας βραχυπρόθεσμης ανάγκης για επένδυση για να αρχίσουν και πάλι οι αγορές να παράγουν. Τάχθηκε επίσης υπέρ της δημιουργίας ευρωομολόγου και ενός αμερικάνικου αντίστοιχου, υποστηρίζοντας ότι κάτι τέτοιο θα έδινε ώθηση στην ανάπτυξη και θα άνοιγε θέσεις εργασίας. 

 

Αναφέρθηκε επίσης και στις χρηματιστηριακές αγορές, οι οποίες, διευκρίνισε, δεν φέρνουν παρά μόνο πρόσκαιρα κέρδη και οι πολίτες επωμίζονται τις ζημιές από τις απώλειες.
Ο Μπίλ Κλίντον, υποστήριξε ότι η αντιμετώπιση της κλιματικής αλλαγής αποτελεί τη λύση της οικονομικής κρίσης και ενδέχεται να δημιουργήσει πολλές θέσεις εργασίας. «Όταν όλοι οι άνθρωποι αλλάξουμε τον τρόπο που παράγουμε και καταναλώνουμε ενέργεια, τότε η ανάπτυξη θα είναι θεαματική», είπε, τονίζοντας ότι η υπερθέρμανη του πλανήτη εμποδίζει την ανάπτυξη. 

Σημείωσε μεταξύ άλλων στην ομιλία του ότι η ανθρωπότητα είναι αλληλοεξαρτώμενη και αν όλοι επιλέγουν να επενδύσουν στην παραγωγική συνεργασία και όχι στη σύγκρουση, τότε όλοι θα έχουμε ένα καλύτερο μέλλον και θα μοιραστούμε όλα τα οφέλη.

Δεν έκανε άμεση αναφορά στο πρόβλημα του Κύπρου, αλλά περιέγραψε ως ένα παράδειγμα τη συνεργασίας ανάμεσα σε μια κατάσταση βαθιάς δυσπιστίας, μια πρόσφατη επιστημονική εργασία από μαθητές για την υπερθέρμανση του πλανήτη. Η νικήτρια ομάδα είχε τέσσερις φοιτητές από την Κίνα, την Ταϊβάν, την Ινδία και το Πακιστάν. «Οι χώρες τους έχουν αντιπαραθέσεις για δεκαετίες, αλλά, αυτοί συνεργάστηκαν μαζί ως μια ομάδα», είπε ο Κλίντον. «Είμαι σίγουρος ότι έχω δίκιο ότι το μέλλον ανήκει σε αυτούς που επιλέγουν τη δημιουργική συνεργασία παρά τη σύγκρουση».

 

Πρόσθεσε ότι ο ίδιος είχε υποστηρίξει σθεναρά «την είσοδο της Κύπρου στην ΕΕ», ένα σχόλιο που χειροκρότησε δυνατά από τα 600 άτομα που παρευρίσκοντο εκεί και περιλάμβαναν υπουργούς, πρώην κυβερνητικούς αξιωματούχους, πολιτικούς ηγέτες, βουλευτές και διπλωμάτες.
