The Armenia - Turkey Protocols

The Armenian-Cypriot community
opposes the signing of the
Armenia-Turkey protocols

The day before yesterday, Thursday 8 October 2009, between 11:00-11:30 at the Armenian Prelature of Cyprus in Nicosia, a press conference took place, representing all the organised bodies of the Armenian-Cypriot community regarding the opposition to the signing of the Armenia-Turkey protocols, scheduled for Saturday, 10 October. The speakers were the chairman of the Administrative Council of the Armenian Church of Cyprus, Dr. Antranik Ashdjian, and the chairman of the Armenian National Committee of Cyprus, Mr Hagop Manougian, in the presence of His Eminence, the Archbishop of the Armenians of Cyprus, Varoujan Hergelian. The ones present were given an open letter, written by the organised bodies of the community, to the President and the government of the Republic of Armenian, which was also read by Mr Manougian.

An introduction was made on the forthcoming signing of the Armenia-Turkey protocols and the main reasons for opposing their signing: a) the rights of the Armenian nation are abrogated, as the right to claim the Turkish-occupied Armenian lands is lost b) also lost is the right of self-determination for the residents of Nagorno-Karabakh, who earned their autonomy with their blood c) there are objections to the formation of committees that will examine the validity of the Armenian Genocide, an undeniable historical fact.

The Armenian-Cypriot community considers that this is another one of Turkey’s tricks, which tries not to miss the train, and claims that the Genocide is the product of imagination, and that Diasporan Armenians are essentially extremists. In fact, Dr. Ashdjian stated that the very presence of Diasporan Armenians is physical testimony that the Genocide did happen, since as he said “our grandfathers did not scatter across the world because they were economic immigrants”. It was stressed that opposing is not only the Armenian-Cypriot community, as it became evident from protests in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Beirut and in Russia, and that it is estimated some 90-95% of the Diasporan Armenians and about 65-70% of Armenians of Armenia oppose the signing of the protocols. In Dr. Ashdjian’s apt description, it is a matter of “a nation-wide wave of opposition”.

By opening and recognising the borders of both states, based on the Treaty of Kars and not the Treaty of Sevres, many of the occupied Armenian lands are basically left to Turkey. Turkey is considered to resort to such devices, just as with the Cyprus problem, to get a certificate of good conduct by the European Union and the international community. As Mr Manougian mentioned, in no way does the Armenian-Cypriot community oppose the opening of the borders and establishing of diplomatic relations, he stressed however the fact that Armenia is under great pressure and that since Turkey was the one to close the border in 1993, as a result of Nagorno-Karabakh’s liberation, it is Turkey that must first open it.

Rounding up the presentation, Mr Manougian showed us a map that recently circulated in Turkish Elementary Schools, showing an extended Turkey, covering parts of Greece, Bulgaria, Iraq (Kurdistan region) and the entire Armenia and Cyprus. This map was withdrawn from schools with the excuse it had mistakes, however - as Dr. Ashdjian also said - these “mistakes” show Turkey’s real intentions.

Αναρωτιέμαι, εκτός από τον αρμένιο πρόεδρο, ποιος άλλος θέλει αυτή τη σχέση;

Phlou...flis.
